Main Career Routes

The Full-time and Online Career Routes pages show how you can develop your career within the Fitness Industry with YMCA Cambridgeshire & Peterborough. There is a link to each course description from these pages. You can also reach each course description from the drop down Course Details menu above.

In addition, a map of the courses we offer can be seen and printed out from here: Career Routes Map

Gym Based Instruction, Level 2

This is the starting point for those wishing to work in a gym, health club or leisure centre. You will learn correct technique and safe and effective use of gym equipment, including cardiovascular equipment, resistance machines and free weights, and how to plan a gym-based exercise session. From here, instructors can progress to the Certificate in Personal Training or other opportunities for career development described below and shown in the Map above.

Studio (Exercise to Music) Instruction, Level 2

The Studio Instructor qualification is the starting point for those wishing to instruct aerobics, body conditioning or other classes set to music. You will learn how to use music, create choreography and plan and instruct safe, effective and motivating group classes. From here, instructors can further develop their skills by following one or more of the optional pathways described below and shown in the Map above.

Career Development, Level 2

Already qualified Fitness Instructors may wish to broaden and enhance their skills by completing Optional Pathway courses, for example the Studio Resistance or Indoor Cycling courses. All Optional Pathway courses are recognised by the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) as Endorsed Training for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and enable qualified Fitness Instructors to maintain their position the Register. Note: the Teaching Physical Activity to Children course is open to individuals who do not already hold a Fitness Instructing qualification.

Advanced Instruction, Level 3
Students may wish to qualify as Advanced Instructors at Level 3. They might want to become a Personal Trainer, an Advanced Studio Instructor, a Course Tutor and/or Assessor, a Course Internal Verifier, or study Sports Massage Therapy. They may also wish to specialise in teaching Older Adults. Studio (Exercise to Music) Instructors may complete any of the Personal Trainer modules as stand-alone qualifications. They must, however, have a recognised Level 2 Gym qualification before they can complete the Advanced Gym Instruction module and qualify for the full Certificate in Personal Training. Note: applicants for Sports Conditioning must already hold a Level 3 Certificate in Advanced Fitness Instruction.
First Aid at Work Training
You will need a CPR Certificate to join the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs), or to maintain your place on the Register. We offer reasonably priced full-time First Aid courses in Cambridge. You can choose from the 3-day First Aid at Work course (valid for three years), the 2-day First Aid at Work Refresher which allows you to up-date your certificate, or the 1-day Emergency Aid at Work for Appointed Persons (valid for three years) as well as a 1-day Paediatric course. A valuable addition to every cv.
