Active IQ Certificate in Teaching Physical Activity to Children Aged 5-11, Level 2

  • Please note: Candidates may also wish to qualify in teaching children aged under 5 years old as well as 5-11 year olds. For those wishing to qualify in both age groups, the total cost will be £420, provided both courses are booked at the same time. This represents a discount of £100. Please contact the office if you wish to enrol for both age groups.

Learn how to introduce children to exercise through fun and enjoyable activities - help them to develop social skills and to grow as individuals. You will be able to plan and deliver safe and effective group and individual physical exercise sessions for children aged 5-11 years old.

TARGET CANDIDATES
This course is designed for:
  • Those wishing to pursue a career in the health and fitness sector, a community setting or in schools as teachers of children's physical activity
    • Note: the course does not qualify candidates to be fitness instructors nor to design specialised programmes for children
  • Fitness Instructors who are seeking to develop their qualifications  
PREREQUISITES
  • Candidates must be aged 16 or over
    • 16-18 year olds may need to be supervised in the workplace once they have achieved the qualification
  • There is an element of communication involved (discussing, presenting, reading and writing) and candidates should therefore have basic communication skills pitched at Level 2
  • It is recommended that candidates undergo a CRB check prior to commencement of the training
    • Note: candidates can be employed before the CRB check is complete provided the organisation is satisfied on the basis of other checks that it is safe to do so; however, organisations cannot let anyone have unsupervised access to children until they have had a satisfactory CRB check
There are no other entry requirements.
 
The Online course covers the theoretical element of the following subjects:
  • Introduction to Anatomy and Physiology
    • The skeletal, neuromuscular, cardio-respiratory and energy systems
  • Preparing a Physical Activity Session for Children
    • The basic underpinning principles in planning exercise sessions for children
  • Teaching a Physical Activity Session for Children
    • Screening, communication skills, modifications for different ages and levels of maturity, teaching safe and effective physical activity for children
  • Concluding and Reviewing a Physical Activity Session for Children
    • How to bring the session to an end, dealing with equipment, reviewing the session
  • Introduction to Working with Children
    • The benefits to children of physical activity, barriers to exercise, Health & Safety at Work and Dare Care Standards Acts, supporting and protecting children from abuse
The course includes two Practical Training Days held at the YMCA in Cambridge on the date(s) listed below.  
ASSESSMENT PROCEDURE
Assessment is is in five parts:
  • Multiple choice Theory Paper
  • Session planning:
    • Screening and risk assessment
    • Preparation of self to teach
    • Preparing a physical activity session - worksheet
  • Instruct a physical activity session for children
  • Conclude and review the physical activity session:
    • Complete an incident/accident report from - worksheet
  • Reflective practice - worksheet
    • Assist with the delivery of a physical activity session for children

Please note that the method of Practical Assessment is by submission of a video recording of your teaching session not less than ten weeks after practical training. There is an administrative fee of £40 to cover the costs of postage and assessment.

However, it is possible to arrange for an Assessor to observe the teaching session in person, for example at a school or gym. This may suit a group of students rather than one student since there is an additional fee of £150 per day plus travel. The method of Practical Assessment can be settled during Practical Training.
