"Tackling Teenage Obesity"

The number of overweight and obese teenagers in the UK has doubled in the last two decades with nearly one in five teenagers now classed as obese. This qualification has been developed to meet the demands of gym operators and address the ever growing plight of teenage obesity. Gym owners - safely open up your facilities to a younger market by offering your gym instructors the latest Active IQ qualification: Gym instructors - broaden your expertise by learning to modify gym instruction for 12-16 years olds.

TARGET CANDIDATES
This course is designed for:
  • Gym Instructors who wish to widen their knowledge and skills to enable them to accommodate adolescents in a gym environment
PREREQUISITES
  • Candidates must hold a Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instruction Gym or equivalent
 
The course covers the following subjects:
  • Defining childhood obesity
  • Physiological changes in adolescence
  • Psychological changes in adolescence
  • Current guidelines for exercise for adolescents
  • Teaching exercise to adolescents
  • How to reflect the physical, mental, cognitive and emotional development of adolescents when planning and teaching
  • Suitable equipment and alternatives
  • Safety considerations
  • Nutrition needs of adolescents
  • Promoting an active healthy lifestyle amongst teenagers
The course is 1 day and is held in Cambridge. All candidates will receive a pre-course study pack prior to the course covering knowledge of the areas listed above. Note: since the Theory Paper is taken during the 1 day course, the pre-course study must be completed prior to the start of the course (see Assessment Procedure below). Candidates should therefore make sure that they have the available home-study time needed for pre-course study.
ASSESSMENT PROCEDURE
Assessment is is in two parts:
  • Multiple choice Theory Paper - taken during the 1 day course
  • Worksheet - completed during the course
