The starting point for those wishing to instruct classes set to music
The CYQ ETM qualification is the starting point for those wishing to instruct aerobics, body conditioning or other classes set to music. Students will learn how to use music, create choreography and plan and instruct safe, effective and motivating group classes.
The course also covers customer care, promoting exercise and overcoming barriers to exercise.

TARGET CANDIDATES
This course is designed for:
- Exercise and fitness enthusiasts who wish to become Exercise to Music Instructors
- Individuals who wish to change careers
- Those who are already working as Fitness Instructors but who have few or no relevant qualifications
PREREQUISITES
- Candidates must be aged 16 or over
There are no other entry requirements; however, it is strongly recommended that you have experience of ETM classes. If you do not have experience you should attend at least ten ETM classes before you attend the practical element of the course so that you are familiar with the moves and to help with your co-ordination.

- Principles of fitness
- Health benefits of exercise
- Healthy eating
- Supporting Clients in Exercise and Physical Activity
- Effective working relationships with clients
- Barriers to exercise
- Customer service
- Planning and instructing Group ETM exercise sessions:
- Safe and effective warm-up
- Cardiovascular workout
- Muscular strength and endurance
- Cool down, including exercises to develop flexibility
The course includes Five Practical Training Days held at the YMCA in Cambridge beginning on the dates listed below.
ASSESSMENT PROCEDURE
Assessment is conducted at the YMCA in Cambridge and is in six parts:
- Multiple choice Anatomy & Physiology Theory Paper
- Health, Safety & Welfare Worksheet
- Multiple choice Principles of Exercise, Fitness & Health Theory Paper
- Support Clients in Exercise & Physical Activity Worksheet
- Plan and prepare a Group ETM exercise session
- Instruct and evaluate a Group ETM exercise session
