Description:  

CYQ Certificate in Gym-based Instruction, Level 2

"The starting point for those wishing to work in a gym, health club or leisure centre"

Students will learn correct technique and safe and effective use of gym equipment, including cardiovascular equipment, resistance machines and free weights, and how to teach and plan a gym-based exercise session. From here, instructors may wish to progress to the Certificate in Personal Training.

TARGET CANDIDATES
This course is designed for:
  • Exercise and fitness enthusiasts who wish to become Gym Instructors 
  • Individuals who wish to change careers
  • Those who are already working as Fitness Instructors but who have few or no relevant qualifications
PREREQUISITES
  • Candidates must be aged 16 or over
COURSE DESCRIPTION
The Online course covers the theoretical elements of the following subjects:
  • Level 2 Exercise & Fitness Knowledge:
    • Bones and joints
    • Muscles, muscle actions and energy systems
    • Cardio-respiratory system
    • Components of fitness and principles of training
  • Health, Safety & Professionalism in Exercise & Fitness Instruction
  • Gym-based Instruction:
    • Safe and effective warm-up
    • Cardiovascular training component
    • Resistance training component
    • Cool down, including exercises to develop flexibility
The course includes Four Practical Training Days held at the YMCA in Cambridge beginning on the dates listed below.
ASSESSMENT PROCEDURE
Assessment is conducted at the YMCA in Cambridge and is in five parts:
  • Multiple choice Theory Paper
  • Health, Safety & Professionalism in Exercise & Fitness Instruction Worksheet
  • Plan and prepare a Gym-based exercise session
  • Instruct a Gym-based exercise session
    • Note: you will be required to bring a volunteer with you to take part in the exercise session
  • Evaluate the session and develop personal coaching practice

21 & 22 and 26 & 27 June 2010: Assessments 29/30 July 2010

13 & 14 and 18 & 19 September 2010: Assessments 14/15 October 2010
COURSE 4: 4 days
8 & 9 and 14 & 15 November 2010: Assessments 16/17 December 2010
