Transitions Project

The Transitions Service provides support for young people aged 7-13 years who are struggling with the move from primary to secondary school, parental separation or bereavement. We work with children individually or in groups of up to 4, in the following ways:

  • Our short term programmes of up to 1 term, are for those young people struggling with particular issues e.g. confidence, self esteem and friendships
  • Our longer programme supports the young people through the last term of primary school to the end of year 7
  • For those needing further support we will provide trained volunteers from the Better Together programme upon exit

We help children with the following topics:

  • Anti-bullying
  • Conflict and anger management
  • Loss and bereavement
  • Relationships and friendships
  • Confidence and self-esteem
  • Loss and bereavement
  • Friendships and relationships
  • Racial equality awareness programme
  • Social skills
Referrals

Children are referred to us from schools, the Positive Transitions Panel, or other Agencies who have contact with the young people and their families.

A young person's comments:

“I started working with the YMCA to help me get less stressed out. Sometimes I can get quite angry and the YMCA has helped me to control that. When I first heard I was going to be joining the project I was a little worried because I didn't know what it was all about, but once I met my project worker and I had it explained to me I felt fine. Now when I have my sessions I really look forward to them, because I know it is helping me to feel better about myself. I also get to have fun with my project worker, we can play games or do some art and it makes me feel special.

I hope that by the end of all my sessions I will know how to deal with things better and not get so stressed. I have really enjoyed my sessions with the YMCA Transitions Project” Amy

Activities

We organise activities for the young people on the long term programme in the summer holidays and winter half term breaks. These include showing the young people what they can access in their own communities as well as visits to the cinema, ice skating, swimming, the zoo, Hunstanton Sealife Centre, and much more.

These activities give the young people an opportunity to explore new positive relationships, build on their social skills, take responsibility for their own behaviour, empower them to make their own decisions and have some fun.

Funding and donations

The Project is funded by the Children's Partnership of the Peterborough City Council.  Any donation received would go towards providing a wider range of activities for the young people.
