“The reality is that most at-risk or vulnerable children and young people, including those from minority groups, often miss out on or opt out of universal provision. Among these, there will be a number who, because of a combination of risk factors associated with offending, are likely to become involved with offending and anti-social behaviour. These are the children and young people who will benefit most from targeted provision of the type the YIP can provide” (YIP Management Guidance- YJB, 2006)
Gladstone YIP provides activities and interventions for 50 young people aged 13-17, living in the central Peterborough area who have been referred by a number of different agencies, including education authorities and the police.
Referred young people are assessed to establish the 'top 50 most at-risk' list. Individual action plans are developed and an appropriate programme of activities and interventions are introduced to reflect the needs of the young person. These activities and interventions are designed to reduce the risk of the young person offending, re-offending and anti-social behaviour.
Gladstone YIP works with other agencies and educational establishments to provide activities and support for the young person such as:
- One-to-one mentoring
- Group work
- Youth club
- Sports
- Holiday activities
- Citizenship and cohesion
- Finance management
- Environment and conservation
All participation in the programme is completely up to the young people.
